CHANGES IN FRED 7-12-09
Upgrade to FileMaker Pro 10
There will be a few changes and improvements with the
upgrade to FileMaker 10. The most
exciting change to us, the IT team, is the advent of script triggers. This will allow scripts to be attached to
simple actions such as loading layouts or editing fields and it opens up a
whole new range of possibilities as we attempt to make FRED as user friendly as
possible.
One
of the more mundane changes that you should be aware of is the location of the
status panel. Previously, you were
accustomed to finding this panel on the left of the screen, as in the picture
to the left. With FileMaker 10, however,
you will see the status panel at the top of the screen, as shown in the picture
below.

In browse mode, your screen will look like figure 1 below. At the top left, notice the notebook with the left and right pointing arrows. This is what you will use to flip through records as needed. On the lower left of the status bar, you will see the word “Layout:” and the bar with the layout name, with a down arrow on the right end. Click on this down arrow if you would like to change layouts.

You may notice that there is no longer a print icon
at the top of the screen. There are several ways to print documents
from FRED. Many of our layouts have been
designed with “Print” buttons built in.
You may also use File>>Print, or the key combination Ctrl+P. Also, by
clicking the “Preview” button in the center of the status panel of figure 1 above, you will be taken to
print preview mode. This will show the
document as it is prepared to print, and it will also change the buttons that
you see in the status panel. The panel
will now look like figure 2
below. You may use the print icon from there to send the
document to your printer. You may also
use the Print Setup button if you
would like to change the document from portrait to landscape view. You may also notice the Save as Excel and Save as
PDF buttons. Unfortunately, those
buttons will only work for people in the local Placerville office. You will not be able to utilize those through
Citrix connections.

The other mode that you may want to use is “Find” mode. You can get to this mode by clicking the Find icon (with the magnifying glass) seen in figure 1. See the picture below. Notice the New Request button. This can be used for doing complex finds where you are searching for multiple types of records. Also notice the buttons for Include and Omit. The button that is dark grey (Include in this case) is the one that is selected. If you are doing a find where you need to omit a certain request, click the “Omit” button. Also notice the “Operators” button is available to the right. You can use that button to select operators such as > or <.
